This is the ninth in a series of 13 write-ups. It talks about Article 8: I believe in the Holy Spirit.
The eighth point in our articles of faith magnifies our belief in the Holy Spirit, the Third Person in the Holy Trinity. As we go through our encyclicals and read our Bible, we can come across the different names attributed to the Holy Spirit. Read the rest of this entry »

Fetched and Brought Home
August 25, 2008
What does it mean to have faith in God? For me, it means allowing myself to be handled by Him, believing that He will guide me to the right path. It is the cure to all my doubts.
Doubt very much clouded my eyes and filled my heart during my preschool years. Back then, every time classes would end, I always sit beside the gate of the school, and then turn my crying mode “on.” It was already dismissal time and my yaya was nowhere to be found. Thoughts like, “Maybe she would not come and fetch me.” or “I would be left alone!” were always in my mind.
Thus, I did not want to play with my classmates because my mind was always troubled. An important issue kept clanging in my head—what would I do if no one would come and fetch me? One by one, as schoolmates were being picked up, the surroundings became more and more quiet. All the people I knew have gone home already. I was left all alone and so I poured out my loneliness and my worry into a tear-filled cry. Fortunately, my “savior” would always come, and then I’ll wipe my tears and be happy, as if the loneliness has not happened. If only my trust would have become stronger, then I would have become the best player of touch-taya at that time.
The same thing applies to our faith in God. In Jesus’ words, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” He guarantees that He will not leave us and that there is no need to fear. I have now grown out of school and am now working but still God has never left me behind. He has always been like my yaya before, coming when all hope seems gone, and wiping every tear of sadness and worry in my heart. God always calls and fetches me from this darkness, to bring me back home with Him.
May all of us have strength in faith!

Icons: Created in the Image of God
August 10, 2008

Iconography has long been a tradition in both the Catholic and Orthodox Christian Churches. Icons play an important role in the faith as they supplement and enrich it. While liturgical music is done with words set in music, icons preach theology in pictures.
The Catholic faith has been misunderstood as having the practice of worshiping idols. Our early Church fathers have clarified this issue by distinguishing between proskynesis (veneration such as bowing down) and latreia (absolute worship). Thus, worship is accorded to God alone and icons are only venerated. Read the rest of this entry »
